چکیده

Land-use history is an important determinant of vegetation patterns in many ecosystems world-wide (Foster 1992, Orwig and Abrams 1994, Verheyen et al. 1999, Dahlstrom et al. 2006). Forest composition has been reported to differ between sites following agricultural abandonment compared with nearby unplowed soils (Glitzenstein et al. 1990, Motzkin et al. 1996). Differences have also been reported in soil chemistry and nutrient cycling processes, including higher pH and calcium in cultivated forest and grassland soils (Glatzel 1991, Connell et al. 1995, Verheyen et al. 1999). However, impacts of land-use history on soil chemistry may be less profound in the U.S. than in Europe (Motzkin et al. 1996, Koerner et al. 1997, Flinn et al. 2005). This has been attributed to the comparatively short history of post-European settlement (150–400 years) in the U.S. relative to Europe (5,000+years; Foster 1992). Moreover, there is a relative scarcity of detailed studies on the impacts of land-use history on plant biogeography and soils in the U.S. (Abrams and Hayes 2008).

A Historical Perspective and Future Outlook on Landscape Scale Restoration in the Northwest Wisconsin Pine Barrens

The concurrent discussions of landscape scale restoration among restoration ecologists, and of historic disturbance pattern as a guideline for forest management among forest scientists, offer a unique opportunity for collaboration between these traditionally separated fields. The objective of this study was to review the environmental history, early restoration projects, and current plans to re...

The efficiency of different sampling methods in studies of vegetation in Central Zagros forests

There are various vegetation sampling methods regarding objectives of Management at forests. To aim of this study, we undertook a comparative study at Shineh Ghelaee protected forest at middle Zagros using single-scale sampling, single-scale sampling based on transects, and multi-scale sampling methods to investigate the herbaceous layer diversity. In order to know the situation of the region a...

Socioeconomic Impact Assessment of Deforestation of Hyrcanian Forests on Local Communities

The present study was conducted to assess socio-economic impacts of deforestation of Hyrcanian forests in two basins of Do-Hezar and Se-Hezar, northern Iran. To this end, changes in the forest area were detected over the period between 1990 and 2006 based on land use land cover maps derived from Landsat and IRS satellite images. The land use changes were investigated by enhancement of the image...
